Dental Implant FAQs

Here at Torrington Dental Care, we understand that many patients may want to know all of the facts about dental implants before choosing to proceed with installation. For that reason, we have compiled this list of frequently asked questions to help our Torrington, CT patients understand the process, benefits, and other important facts about dental implants.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that Dr. Kuzmin implants directly into the patient’s jawbone. Most dental implants are made up of the fixture, the abutment, and the crown. Once these three pieces have healed, they become a permanent and natural-looking replacement tooth.

How long does it take to get implants?

This depends on how many implants you get, the location of the implants and the health of the patient. Most dental implant installations take about an hour for each implant.

How long does the entire implants process take?

At Torrington Dental Care, our dental implant process usually takes three to nine months. Extra time may be required if supplemental procedures are necessary.

Will dental implant placement be painful?

The level of pain often depends on the patient and their individual pain tolerance. The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia in Dr. Kuzmin’s office, in much the same way as a filling. Once the anesthesia takes effect, patients usually feel only mild discomfort. After the procedure, any residual pain can usually be well controlled with over the counter pain medications.

Can I eat after my restoration’s placement?

Dr. Kuzmin will provide a diet and written instructions on how to care for your new implants after the procedure. However, it is important to avoid chewing on the dental implant site for the first few days. Patients should eat soft foods and drink lots of water.

Will insurance pay for my dental implants?

Dental implants are generally not paid for by dental insurance companies. Some medical plans may offer partial payment depending on when and how your teeth were lost. Torrington Dental Care offers many helpful payment options to ensure that our Torrington, CT patients get the best treatment available, regardless of their insurance coverage.

How long do implants last?

Many dental implants have now been in place and functional for 30 or more years. However, we have no specific answer for this question. Once a dental implant has fused to the bone properly, it should last decades if not longer.
