Are You A Candidate?

If you are missing one or more teeth, dental implants are an attractive and healthful way to restore a functional smile. There are many benefits to getting dental implants, but not everyone is an ideal candidate for this permanent and easy procedure. This page contains some basic information on dental implant candidacy, less ideal patients, and a few other important issues surrounding dental implants.

Ideal Dental Implant Candidates

It is Dr. Kuzmin’s practice to examine each patient before it can be determined whether or not they are a good candidate. However, in general terms, Torrington Dental Care prefers to place dental implants in patients with the following characteristics:

  • Adequate jawbone density to support the dental implant
  • Healthy teeth and gums
  • Good oral hygiene practices
  • Overall good health
  • Willingness to carefully follow Dr. Kuzmin’s instructions before and after the procedure

Less Ideal Candidates

Dr. Kuzmin is less likely to place dental implants in the following types of patients:

  • Pregnant women
  • Smokers
  • Diabetics
  • Patients with uncontrolled immune system diseases or disorders
  • Children with undeveloped jawbones
  • Patients with untreated gum disease or oral health problems

Bone Grafting Treatment

One of the most critical factors in dental implant placement is having adequate bone structure to properly support the dental implant. If you lack sufficient density in your jawbone, the implant may fail to function properly and may need to be removed.

If you have been diagnosed with the above problem or have suffered from a loss of jawbone volume over the years, you may be able to receive a bone graft to restore healthy bone density in your jaw. During this simple in-office procedure, donated bone is transplanted into your jaw and firmly attached. Once healed, Dr. Kuzmin can tell you if you are now eligible for the dental implants procedure.

Treatment Candidacy and The Problem of Gum Disease

Gum disease is a problem that many patients experience. Unfortunately, it can also impact dental implant candidacy. In many cases, gum disease has caused significant tooth loss or other oral health problems. If you have gum disease, you will need to be treated prior to initiating the dental implant process. Once you have successfully treated your periodontal disease, you can be re-evaluated for dental implant placement.
