Your Recovery From Dental Implant Surgery

August 30, 2017Dr. Frank KuzminDental Implants

Dental implant surgery may sound daunting, but just like every surgical procedure, recovery varies depending on the patient, their particular case, and the intensity of their procedure.

With that in mind, let us look into what life is like immediately after dental implant surgery.

Recovery

As mentioned, recovery time depends on each patient and how they care for themselves after surgery. However, other things to take into consideration include:

  • Number of teeth affected
  • Number of implants inserted
  • Recovery management
  • Extent of surgery

Patients who have multiple implants inserted and are in need of grafting will need a little more time to recover completely from their surgery in comparison to those who didn’t. In fact, those with a less invasive approach will only have minor swelling and discomfort. It’s crucial that you’re aware of the state of your mouth in order to be better prepared for the recovery process.

Although each case varies, patients are usually able to return to a normal diet after seven to ten days of recovery. However, patients may need to stick to a soft diet for as long as six weeks in order to ensure that the implants recover properly and aren’t damaged during this vulnerable stage.

Dr. Kuzmin will also guide you through the process and advise you on how to care for your new implants. This may include soft brushing in the sensitive areas and taking prescribed medication.

Side Effects Of Surgery

Just like with recovery, side effects experienced after dental implant surgery also vary according to the patient. Naturally, if a patient has a more traumatic surgery they might experience occasional bruising, swelling, and discomfort. An example of that would be a patient who needed bone or soft tissue grafting. They will more likely have to deal with swelling in the affected area in contrast to someone who didn’t need grafting.

In reality, a lot of it also falls on the patient and how they treat their implants after surgery. If you follow the advice of the dentist and comply with the recommendations, you’ll have a speedy recovery. Unfortunately, not everyone is willing to comply. Things that deter the healing process include poor diet choices, poor dental care, and smoking.
